Jesus gave His disciples three specific signs to watch for concerning the time of His Return. Two are in Matthew 24:
1) His gospel must first be "preached throughout the whole world, as a testimony unto all nations" (v. 14) 2) and the prophecy of Daniel must be fulfilled. (v. 15) And in Luke 21, He provided a third sign: 3) That after Jerusalem had been "trodden down by the Gentiles" He would return when "the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled." (v. 24) 18 centuries later, Bible scholars across the world realized that all three of these prophecies were being fulfilled simultaneously. The last places on earth that had been inaccessible to Christian missionaries were opening up in the 1840's. The scholars scrutinized the prophecy of Daniel and concluded that it pointed to the years 1843-1844. And, the Edict of Toleration was signed in 1844, officially permitting the Jewish people to return to the Holy Land for the first time since they were banished by the Romans in the first century. (Events following from this Edict led to the creation of the modern State of Israel and continue to be the primary evidence that the prophecies of the Bible are being fulfilled in our modern age.) The evidence was so clear to the Christians of the time that a great movement of expectation, unparalleled before or since, arose among Christian scholars and the Christian community. But when the appointed year came, and Christ did not descend from the physical heavens as they had anticipated, scholars concluded that their calculations concerning the time must have been wrong. Few were willing to examine the other alternative: That their calculation of the year was correct, but that their understanding of the manner, meaning and place of the return was not accurate.
